Climate change action needs growth

Climate change is, in my view, a far more important problem than economic recovery. While a second financial crisis might see us moving back to the Stone Age it remains unlikely, but climate change is a certainty and threatens the very survival of the species.

The inaction on climate change globally is therefore quite staggering (although the EU is far ahead of the rest of the world on this). In other countries, such as the US and Australia 'climate change deniers' hold sway and even get some support in the UK as the picture above shows.

In the Guardian Max Boykoff reviews the current situation and explains that before we can get serious and effective action on climate change we need economic growth. The irony of course is that it is economic growth that caused the climate change in the first place. However for politicians to be prepared to commit resources to tackling climate change they need the population to feel well enough off to afford it, otherwise they vote for the guy who promises tax cuts.

  1. The solutions to global warming, there are some simple and others that are not so simple... but the ones that perhaps seem simple in my opinion, appear difficult to achieve to others because people HATE change and the population of the world are over consuming unnecessarily and by that i mean all of these new gadgets and such which cause ALOT of pollution to the world... of course we need to develop our technology but only for beneficial causes such as healthcare not all these iPhones and iPads(#Galen XD)... so buy a nokia next time galen ;).
Perhaps the more difficult solutions would be... for future production of transport methods would be to use a more environmentally sustainable fuels and make cars hybrid... trains - electric etc...
This could go for building construction as well... use solar panels and other energy sources...
And as the article says Economic Growth causes Pollution, if we prioritize our efforts into Environmentally sustainable methods of living... yes it will have a bad affect on current levels of GHG emissions but to be able to reach these sustainable goals we may have to allow this for a quick transition to sustainable ways OR go for the gradual change and put it on the waiting list to be thought about...

  3. I also agree that it is important to tackle climate change. I think that a few years ago most people didn't really care about climate change thinking that it was just some global issue that didn't really effect them-people just carried on normally with their lives, continuing to do what they do. However now, I think as more people are being educated about it and we are actually physically seeing some astonishing effects, people are taking it more seriously and really trying to make a change, even celebrities are getting people in on it. It's nice to know that Europe are ahead of the world, but honestly for there to be a real difference, everyone needs to be together on this, especially the other big polluting countries in the world *cough* USA *cough*. I think it's a joke how people can deny climate change now, but I just think that we need to do whatever it takes to at least slow this change down because this could get dangerous, who knows what the future will bring right?
